Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Head to Nyungwe Forest National Park (5 to 6 hours drive)

This trip introduces you to Rwanda’s countryside with en route visits to the Butare National Museum and Nyanza royal palace. You also get some time for a lunch break and later proceed with the journey. You are likely to reach Nyungwe late afternoon and directly head to your lodge for a rest.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking

Head to the park headquarters for a briefing about this primate experience and then head out to Nyungwe forest. This is one of East Africa’s oldest and undisturbed forests a home for chimpanzees and other primates. You will see other wildlife species including birds, other primates, later be brought back to your lodge for a rest.

Day 3: Colobus Monkey tracking & Canopy Walk

Colobus monkey tracking in Nyungwe gives one an opportunity to have another primate tracking experience in the forest. A trek to meet the Colobus monkeys introduces you to these unique primates enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. In the afternoon go for a canopy walk seeing birds plus primates that love to inhabit the high canopy layers.

Day 4: Head to Volcanoes National Park & Nature Walk

After breakfast at your lodge you will be transferred to Volcanoes National park a home to the mountain gorillas. You will have en route stop overs for a lunch break and photography at places of interest. Arrive early afternoon early enough for a guided nature walk along the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo.

Day 5: Mountain gorilla tracking experience

You will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing then guided to the forest to meet the gorillas. Just like Chimpanzees, mountain gorillas also have a DNA similar to humans and offer exclusive primate experiences. You will be allowed in the presence of the gorillas for an hour a very exclusive wildlife encounter. Later you will be brought back to the park and go for a cultural experience or to your lodge and rest.

Day 6: Dian Fossey or Mount Bisoke Hike.

On this day you will choose to do a Dian Fossey hike where you will know about the wildlife conservation work of Dian. She was an American zoologist who lived in the area in the 1980s. You can alternatively go Mountain Climbing to one of the Virunga massif mountains. Mount Bisoke has a crater lake on its summit and offers scenic views of the greater Virunga massif.

Day 7: Golden Monkey Tracking and back to Kigali

After breakfast, go for a briefing and go to the forest again for yet another primate expedition. Golden monkey encounters in Volcanoes national park are very extraordinary making one greatly appreciate the gift of nature. After the trek you will be driven back to Kigali for a drop off at your Hotel.

Day 8: Head To Akagera National Park

Start your morning with a transfer to Akagera National Park after being picked up from your hotel or airport. The drive is fair taking 3 hours with chances of stopping over for photography in-case you want. Arrive early at the park for lunch and in the Afternoon go for game drives seeing the major wildlife the park has to offer.

Day 9: Game drives and Boat cruise

On this day you will start with an early morning and sunrise game drive in the northern sector. This has the highest wildlife concentration and while here expect to see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, birds among others. There are well demarcated game drive trails giving you a 360 degree view of the park. You will later return to your lodge and in the afternoon go for a boat cruise along Lake Ihema. Here you will spot a number of birds, Hippos, crocodiles and other wildlife.

Day 10: Game Drive & Departure

On this departure day you will have early morning game drives as you exit the park for a transfer back to Kigali for a drop off at your hotel or airport if on schedule.
