This is one of the Rwanda Safaris or tours for those with a short time in Rwanda.  It starts with an early pick up from Kigali at 4:30 am for a transfer to Volcanoes National Park. You are expected at the park by 7:00 am and a 4:30 am pick up is very ideal. You will reach early enough for briefing about the rules and regulations while on a gorilla trek.

You are then guided for the hike taking a 1 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. Stay in the presence of the gorillas for an hour taking photos and later head back to the park headquarters.  You are awarded certificates of participation,  drive back to Kigali or a drop off of your preference depending on schedule.

This Rwanda tour option explores primates in Volcanoes National Park that are mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.

Day 1: Kigali Excursion and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park (3 hours drive)

Starts with a pick up from the Hotel or airport and head for a city tour to the major attractions. Must Visit Kigali attractions include the Kigali genocide memorial, Kandt House and other places of interest. Have lunch and embark on a 3 hours drive to Volcanoes National Park ahead of your primates expedition.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking Adventure

This starts with a briefing then hiking for a duration of 1 to 6 hours to meet the gorillas . Once you get to them, stay in their presence for an hour taking photos and getting to know about their behavior.  You will see other wildlife species in the park especially birds enjoying sights and sounds of nature. Later be brought back to the park headquarters for your certificates of participation and later go back to your lodge. If you are not tired, go for a cultural visit where you will get to know the local Rwandan culture.

Day 3: Golden Monkey tracking & Departure

Golden monkeys are endangered primates in the Virunga massif and in Rwanda they can be tracked in Volcanoes national park. They are covered in golden fur and are also pure vegetarian that usually feed on plants. You will be briefed about this experience then be led to the forest where you will meet the golden monkeys. After the trek you will be brought back for a transfer to Kigali or drop depending on schedule.

6 Days Rwanda Primates Tour

Rwanda has other primates including chimpanzees, Colobus monkeys, L’hoest monkeys in Nyungwe forest in the southwestern part of the Country. You check on the itinerary below if you want to visit Nyungwe forest in addition to the mountain gorilla park.

Detailed Itinerary

This trip introduces you to Rwanda’s countryside with en route visits to the Butare National Museum and Nyanza royal palace. You also get some time for a lunch break and later proceed with the journey. You are likely to reach Nyungwe late afternoon and directly head to your lodge for a rest.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking 

Head to the park headquarters for a briefing about this primate experience and then head out to Nyungwe forest. This is one of East Africa’s oldest and undisturbed forests a home for chimpanzees and other primates. You will see other wildlife species including birds, other primates,  later be brought back to your lodge for a rest.

Day 3: Colobus Monkey tracking & Canopy Walk

Colobus monkey tracking in Nyungwe gives one an opportunity to have another primate tracking experience in the forest. A trek to meet the Colobus monkeys introduces you to these unique primates enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. In the afternoon go for a canopy walk seeing birds plus primates that love to inhabit the high canopy layers.

Day 4: Head to Volcanoes National Park & Nature Walk

After breakfast at your lodge you will be transferred  to Volcanoes National park a home to the mountain gorillas. You will have en route stop overs for a lunch break and photography at places of interest. Arrive early afternoon early enough for a guided nature walk along the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo.

Day 5: Mountain gorilla tracking experience

You will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing then guided to the forest to meet the gorillas. Just like Chimpanzees, mountain gorillas also have a DNA similar to humans and offer exclusive primate experiences. You will be allowed in the presence of the gorillas for an hour a very exclusive wildlife encounter. Later you will be brought back to the park and go for a cultural experience or to your lodge and rest.

Day 6: Golden Monkey Tracking and back to Kigali

After breakfast, go for a briefing and go to the forest again for yet another primate expedition. Golden monkey encounters in Volcanoes national park are very extraordinary making one greatly appreciate the gift of nature. After the trek you will be driven back to Kigali for a drop off depending on schedule.
